Zcash launched in October 2016 as the first public blockchain to implement zk-SNARKs at scale. The protocol was designed by a team of cryptographers including Zooko Wilcox, with a clear thesis: transactions could be fully encrypted while still being verifiable on a public ledger. The technology was paradigm-shifting at the time. Monero relied on ring signatures and confidential transactions; Zcash offered a more elegant mathematical solution. The ETF approval changes the distribution channel, not the underlying technology. Grayscale's vehicle provides traditional investors with a regulated entry point to ZEC exposure, bypassing the need to interact with crypto exchanges or self-custody wallets.
